In addition to going through my divorce, I've also helped many women through their divorce.  Women coming into my office always asked the same questions: Should I divorce him? Is your ex-husband self-employed or hard to find?  One call to the county court house will send the IRS after your ex-husband.  Of course you need to call the right person.  Unfortunately, most women don't know this little fact.  This is just one of many little secrets the lawyers don't want you to know.  Why?  Because I'm sorry to say that most divorce lawyers are only in business to make money for themselves, not help you.   Never pay a lawyer to deal with child support issues.  How the Divorce Lawyers really work I'm not a divorce lawyer, I'm a divorced mom.  For years, I was a paralegal in a large law office.  In other words, I did all they work while the lawyers got rich off women like us.  As a good employee, I couldn't say anything at the time.  I finally left my legal firm because I had seen enough.  I learned that women can't always trust their lawyers.  Too often, divorce lawyers are only looking out for themselves, not you.  Even women that won their divorce often paid way too much for it.  What's the sense of winning your divorce if you have to pay it all to your divorce lawyer in the end?  The trick is to keep everything you win in your divorce settlement.  The Dirty Tricks Lawyers Play When you meet with your lawyer for the first time, they'll often tell you that you have an easy case so you'll be able to handle it cheaply and quickly.  That part is almost always true.  So why does it never seem to work out that way? The first thing your lawyer will ask for is a hefty retainer fee.  Often this fee is between $2,000-$3,000.  If your case is so simple and is only expected to cost $500, then why does your lawyer demand $2,000 up front?  This should be your first tip off. I spent years in a law firm.  I can count the number of divorces that only cost $500 on one hand!  Unless you really know how to manage your lawyer, your entire retainer fee (and often more) will always get used up.  It's amazing how good the lawyers are at finding little things to fight over.  Don't forget that your husbands lawyer is up to the same dirty trick. Lawyers don't care who wins the divorce!  They charge by the hour, so they get paid either way.  The more you and your husband fight, the more hours they work and more money they make.  The lawyers have sneaky ways of making sure you'll argue over something.  They'll find a million reasons to send your husband letters and start a fight.  His lawyer will do the same.  Watch out for this little trick because each letter will cost you $100.  Each 15 minute phone call to your attorney will cost you $80.  Even if you never go to court, the "so-called" negotiations can cost you thousands in just a few weeks.  It's sad, but true!  I used to see it happen everyday.     If you think it's only men that pull this trick, think again.  The women lawyers are as bad a the men!  I'm On Your Side As a single mother raising a child, I'm on your side.  I know what it's like to go through a divorce.  I want to see you get the best deal you can.  I don't want you to be taken advantage of by the system, greedy lawyers, or your husband. The problem is most women don't know just how much power they have during a divorce proceeding.  I've seen many strong, successful women get intimidated by their ex-husbands into a bad settlement.  Lawyers will often scare women into thinking they need to spend thousands in legal fees to get a good settlement.  You have power.  This is the secret the lawyers don't want you to know.   You don't need to spend thousands fighting over what's legally yours anyway.
