Now the problem is some people jump from room to room, project to project trying to "wing-it" and think they can organize an entire house in 23 minutes like they do on tv...but quickly become discouraged and give up without making a dent. Other people simply stuff their drawers and closets, looking for more and more storage so they can hide more junk. Still others spend their days waiting to be motivated, waiting for the "right time" to get started, wondering if there's a magic potion to make it all disappear before their very eyes. Well guess what? Those who are organized know there are rules to keeping clutter out of their homes. They understand there are simple, practical steps you need to take to maintain long-lasting order and create a tranquil, relaxing home. You don't have to be born organized to be organized I don't know if I was actually "born" organized, but I do know how easy it is to get rid of clutter and organize a home once you learn the home organization strategies I'm about to share with you. Now a lot of what I know about being organized comes from being a Professional Organizer for the past four years. See, getting myself organized is one thing. But helping other people understand how to do it is another story. And once I became a member of The National Association of Professional Organizers I was able to learn even more of the proven strategies for motivating and teaching people how to live in a more organized and clutter-free home. I was even interviewed and written about in this past January's Better Homes and Gardens "Home Remodeling Ideas" magazine with some of my strategies on home organization. But the thing is, you don't have to be a professional organizer and you definitely don't have to be "born" organized to be organized. My wife Megan is the perfect example. I remember when we first started dating I walked into her apartment for the first time and there were boxes everywhere. And not just two or three. There were maybe fifteen or twenty -- piled up against the walls of her apartment. And she'd been living there for eight months! The thing is, she didn't even know what was in those boxes. It was just a bunch of stuff, junk...clutter she had been collecting. So I had to help her out. We went through all of those boxes, got rid of most of this "stuff" that she didn't even need and figured this could work -- me and her -- because as they say...opposites do attract. It's not that hard once you know how to do it Megan was a classic packrat. And clutter just seemed to follow her around. But you know what? That was the "old days." Because today - nine years later - Megan and I have a growing family and no matter how hectic it gets...we've been pretty successful creating a relaxing, stress-free, organized home we enjoy with our kids, our family, and our friends. We're proof of the positive benefits of having order in your home, making sure there's always a place for everything, and controlling 'stuff' before it turns into clutter. Is our house always perfect and neat? Of course not. But because both Megan and I know what it takes and know how to minimize and simplify, tidying up and getting things back in order takes minutes instead of days.
