Are you getting anywhere with your acting dream?  From the desk of Alan Champigny September 2008 Dear potential acting superstar, I don’t know how ‘they’ do this – how ‘they’ manage to convince everybody that great acting talent is born and not made. The fact is that every actor in the world is ‘made’ and not born. How do I know this? I was a professional actor but now I mostly teach it. Look, I enjoy teaching acting. Taking all kinds of people united by a love of and a burning desire to act. Because I love what I do I don’t want to lose my job. And that’s most decidedly what will happen if anyone knew I was doing this. That’s why I’ve used a pseudonym. Believe me, I do make a very good living out of what I do. In the next few minutes I’m going to show you how you can kick start your acting career.  It’s no good just having a burning desire to act. You also have to learn how to act. OK, it’s true you can do al this on your own with no knowledge to start with. But have you really thought how long it would take. I’ll tell you – if you’re a genius or very very lucky, it’ll take years. The rest of you will take decades if at all. What you need is a properly structured acting course, developed by professional actors. Not just any professional actor either. Only by actors who know how to teach. Has anyone tried and failed to teach you anything? In my case it was the PC. A long time ago I needed to be able to use a PC, and I couldn’t. So I bought myself one and asked a friend to help. My friend knows just about everything about PCs. Can you guess what happened? My friend just couldn’t teach me. Firstly I had apparently bought the wrong PC. He gave me a 20 minute lecture on the things, explaining exactly why mine was overpriced crap. I didn’t understand or retain a word. It got harder once he tried to show me how it worked. I eventually learned enough, well enough to do this anyway. Only after I got another teacher though. The funny thing is, she is a teacher. She’s good at teaching and only knew just enough about PCs to teach me what I needed to know. I teach Acting While I love my job I do see some major problems, kids who desperately want to act but can’t get to acting school because of the fees, or the competition.   How many times have you tried to get on in acting? Have you auditioned for anything yet? If so, have you actually got the part you auditioned for? Or any part at all?  Frustrating isn’t it? How are you going to get any experience or an agent if you don’t have any experience to show? This is the old chicken and egg situation. You can’t get a part until you can show experience and you can’t get a part without experience. There’s another side to this as well. You can’t get a part unless you improve but you’ve gone as far as you can on your own and you need experience. You can, of course, go to acting college. If you’re serious you will improve there. But how are you going to get there in the first place? This is very expensive so you don’t want to make any mistakes here. You need to get to the best acting school available don’t you? Especially if you’re really serious about making acting your career.   But, to get into the best acting schools, apart from the money, you’ll be in competition with lots of people with the same ideas you have. Have you noticed the competition for places at any half decent acting school? Have you noticed how some people just have more money and better opportunities than you? Some people can afford acting lessons, have the opportunity to join local acting groups where the can at least gain some experience. Experience that will stand them in good stead when auditioning or when applying for acting school.  If you’re not totally committed to being an actor then stop reading this now I am very serious about this. I only want those who are committed to acting to read on. If you’re not passionate about being an actor then it’s best if you stop reading here and move on to something else.  Talent like Acting is NOT a natural talent, it is created. I know you're a little skeptical right now so let me prove it to you. Do you think talents like Will Smith's or Nicole Kidman's just came to them as soon as they started their first rehearsal? Actors are manufactured by one thing specialist training. Once you know exactly what you're doing you can start your own training. Have you seen any of the wealth of reality TV (the one’s that develop talent) shows showing recently? I'm hooked on a lot of them and they all show the same thing... Talents you think of as 'natural' are not that at all. There are all sorts of programs showing how amateurs improve out of all recognition...
