Learn How To Teach Your Bichon Frise What You Want. Janet Combs 8:34 AMHamilton, Ohio Belle: Love on four legs. Hi, My name is Janet Combs. They call me the Bichon lady. I have been breeding and raising Bichon Frises since 1993 and during that time I have helped literally hundreds of Bichon Frise owners just like you to have a happy, healthy, and well behaved pet. I know my book, Bichon Frise: A Guide For Love And Care can help you solve all of your Bichon problems. You see, this is not some “generic” dog training information. This is written ONLY for Bichon Frise owners. You’ll learn things about Bichon Frise training most proffesional dog trainers don’t even know. Here’s why. My mother, Helen Davis bred and raised Bichon Frises in southwestern Ohio for 23 years. She practically introduced the breed to this region of the country, and is responsible directly, or indirectly, for most of the Bichons in Ohio, Kentucky, and Indiana. She absolutely adored these dogs. She often said to me, (sometimes with tears in her eyes), “You don’t understand. These are more than just dogs”. And, she was right. I didn’t understand. Until I started breeding them myself. My mother , 2 sisters and I have a combined 56 years of experience breeding and training Bichon Frise. In 1993 I lost my job of 20 years due to “downsizing”. My mother convinced me that breeding Bichons would be a way to pick up some of the financial “slack”. And be fun as well. So, she gave me “Buttons” one of her best female, and provided stud service and I was on my way. Hi Janet,Just wanted to drop you a line to say thanks. Megan is now 5 months old, and thanks to the tips you gave me she’s been an absolute joy. My friends and family just love her.Lisa Miller,Hamilton, Ohio PS. You’re right. That “secret weapon” is a life saver. Out of her second litter I picked out “Belle” to keep for myself and gave Buttons back to my mother where she could retire in the familiar surroundings of the farm where she’d been raised. I don’t know if was just “dumb luck”, or divine intervention, but Belle turned out to be a very special dog. She is much more than a pet . She is my friend. It was with the help of Belle, and my mother that I learned what amazing dogs Bichon Frises truly are. Bichon Frises are very intelligent dogs. For instance Belle was the only dog I’ve ever seen that learned by watching, as opposed to being taught everything. Our Border Collie had terrible hay fever. So he sneezed a lot. He sneezed on several occasions while I was giving him and Belle a treat. Soon after, whenever Belle wanted a treat she would walk up to me and sneeze. This kind of intelligence can be very positive, but it has its drawbacks as well. An intelligent dog can be easier to train, but it can also make the dog very “headstrong” Bichons can be manipulative and stubborn so you need to start your Bichon Frise training immediately. Be consistent in their discipline and let them know you mean what you say. From Belle’s third litter we kept Annie. Belle was so easily trained I was caught a little off guard by Annie. Annie was a more typical Bichon. Many bichons can be difficult, and that was Annie. She was timid, and stubborn which made her tough to train. Annie would; · Bark at every little noise she heard, · Go crazy whenever somebody came to door and jump all over them. I know she thought she was just being friendly, but it was very annoying! · Chew on my fingers · Chew on the furniture. · And (yuck!) she was eating poop! But, by using some of the tricks, and techniques I’d learned from my mother, and from having raised three litters of pups I was able to avoid the problems many Bichon Frise owners have and break Annie of all of her bad habits. Janet,I wasn’t sure if a Bichon Frise was right for me. But, after reading your book I decided to get one. Thanks to your advice I was able to find a great breeder and got the “pick of the litter”. When I take him for walks my neighbors always comment on what a beautiful dog he is. Thanks a bunch,Sandy Cavender,Akron, Ohio Well, then came Walker. Our little male. We came to call him “Wild Man” Walker.Full of “spit and vinegar” Walker was a handful. Energetic, and curious to a fault it took everything I knew, and then some, to get him under control. He was about 6 months old when we got him, and had had very little training. Now he is my husbands best friend, following him everywhere he goes, obeying his every command. With over 13 years of personal experience I’ve solved just about every problem a Bichon Frise owner can have. Now I want to help you have the best experience possible with your Bichon.
