Violent crime can affect anyone at any time. This includes assault, domestic violence, robbery, car jacking, rape, and murder. These crimes can happen in your home, nearby, at work, or in almost any public place. Violence is basically an equal opportunity crime. If you're interested in learning fail-safe self defense skills to defend yourself and your loved ones, while ditching your fear and victim mentality, listen up... Have You Ever Been Attacked by Someone With VIOLENCE on His Mind? I have. I've been a victim of a violent crime. It was terrifying, and I did NOT like being so powerless. I sure wish I'd known more about self defense back then! In college, I was mugged while riding my bicycle near my urban college campus... By a 13 and a 16-year old! Ridiculous, right? However, I am a small woman. I like to say, "I'm 5 feet in shoes," but the truth is, I'm smaller than just about every other adult—and many children!—I know. You might say I appear to be a natural-born victim, especially when I was a naive college kid, believing, "It will never happen to me; they won't bother me if I don't bother them". So I routinely rode home on my bicycle through city streets after off-campus school assignments. One dreary winter day, I was pedaling along through a ghetto area I'd ridden several times before. Next thing I knew, 2 young ruffians were knocking me off my bike and getting ready to ride away on it. When I tried to resist, they whipped me with a knotted chain. Luckily, my injuries weren't serious, but it was a terrifying experience, nonetheless. And since I was then left defenseless, in a bad neighborhood, the outcome could have been much worse. So, here I was, at age 19, open, trusting in the innate good of man, a victim of a violent crime I never anticipated. This experience could have been enough to instill me with permanent fear and anxiety. But, you know what? I didn't accept the victim role then and I don't accept it now! I don't care if I'm small and a woman. I vowed never to be a victim again, if I could prevent it. I became determined to find a way to protect myself better should I ever get into that type of situation again. After all, being a victim of crime is NO FUN... I didn't like having my bike stolen, and I definitely did not enjoy being lashed with a heavy chain. For months (maybe even years), I would be overcome with the symptoms of fear… heart palpitations, sweaty palms, an expectation of impending doom... whenever I would get into even marginally dangerous neighborhoods or situations. But for years, I didn't know what to do about it. So whenever I started to feel threatened in any way (real or imagined), I slunk away or ran for cover as fast as I could. Those are not bad strategies, by the way. It's always best to avoid a fight or confrontation … if you can. Unfortunately, it's not always possible. SOONER OR LATER ... You'll Be in a Life-Threatening Situation Too It's a simple fact of life—given the pervasive violence in today's world—at some point, you're going to be faced with the need to defend yourself from some low life. Here are just a few statistics just related to women: 14% of women in the US admit to being abused by their husbands or boyfriends.
4 women are killed everyday by their abusive partners.
In the US, more than one woman is raped every single minute. But men, don't let those statistics fool you. Increasingly, men are also the victimes of violent crimes of all types. Are you going to be ready for that situation when it hits you? Chances are, if you're an average, law-abiding citizen, the answer is NO. Most people DON'T plan ahead for these events, because they don't want to believe it's ever going to happen to them. But it WILL happen, believe me. And, if you're like most people, it's only after it DOES happen that you'll clearly realize how much you wish you'd prepared for it ahead of time. Because if you HAD prepared, maybe the outcome would have been more positive. Maybe you wouldn't have been hurt or lost your personal property. "I ordered the self defence course and it is fabulous. Thank you... John Murdock, MurdockMRD56@aol.com Perhaps you've taken (or thought about taking) a martial arts class, thinking it would provide the self-defense training you wanted. Makes sense, right? And, there are tons of so-called "self-defense experts" out there to tell you fancy martial arts classes are EXACTLY what you need. But don't you believe it... I tried martial arts myself. Partly, it was to spend more quality time with my teenaged daughters. But also, I hungered for more confidence in knowing how to defend myself. I took Tang Soo Do karate for more than 5 years. In fact, I have my black belt, and I'm real proud of my achievement, for many reasons. I learned about 15 intricate "forms," lots of fancy kicks and hand moves, and a smattering of Korean and Tang Soo Do philosophy, traditions, and history. But I didn't really learn that many practical strategies for self defense that I knew with absolute confidence I'd be able to execute in a real world attack situation. The Problem with Most Martial Arts Even martial arts experts get beat up in the streets. I hate to say it because I've spent so many years—and so much money—on martial arts classes and on sparring mats; and I learned a lot. But often times these days, martial arts school is more about colorful belts, expensive uniforms, and those monthly dues, i.e., money. It's not that you don't learn anything useful. But there are too many rules and restrictions and learning of complex moves that are of no use in the real world. While out in the streets, there ARE no rules. Anything goes, and you'd better be ready to respond in kind. Just try to whip out one of those complex martial arts maneuvers at the drop of a hat. Just imagine ... "OK, now, I grab his right forearm with my left thumb, turned to the outside, while I spin to the right ... or is it the left ... or is it his left wrist and my right hand ..." Forget it, by the time you remember how to execute the move, it's too late to use it. The bad guy's already got you! You need some simple, easy-to-execute moves that you can pull out of the old memory bank at a moment's notice. You need to know how to get out of ANY situation, no matter what or who, with your life and possessions intact.
