My childhood was very normal. I was involved in many sports like baseball, basketball & football. Sure, I had my fix of video games, but I was a very slender & athletic kid.   Adolescence is a challenging time for most kids, but my life was about to become a living nightmare due to one unwanted & unexpected development in my young body.   At about the time I was starting my freshman year in high school, I noticed my nipples starting to protrude out. Not only were my nipples (puffy looking) starting to stick out noticeably, but there were also hard, circular glands formed directly behind them. I was in complete confusion regarding my newly formed “man boobs”. The only person I told about my newfound deformity was my mom.   I unaffectionately coined my gynecomastia glands as “rocks underneath my nipples” or just as “my rocks”. After telling my mom about my problem, she really didn’t know how to react. For the most part, she just assumed that it wasn’t a big deal & they would go away on their own. During a physical at the doctor’s office (required before playing sports), she mentioned my “rocks” to the doctor. He briefly examined my gynecomastia glands and said something to the extent of: “They are just glands. They will go away on their own.”   The doctor’s explanation did little to comfort me, but I took his comments to be true. I figured I would just have to live with my man boobs for another few months and they would magically dissolve (boy, was I wrong!!). I couldn’t bare to think of “sucking it up” & dealing with my disgusting looking chest for many more months or years on end…   Can you relate?   Some of the things I would do/not do to try to conceal my gynecomastia:   Tape my nipples with scotch tape in an “X” pattern to reduce visibility of my puffy nipples Constantly pull down on my shirt to help reduce the obvious appearance of my gynecomastia Wear 2 layers of shirts in 90+ degree weather to better conceal my puffy nipples Pray that I didn’t get picked to the “Skins” team when playing basketball in gym class Pinch and twist (a.k.a “titty twisters”) my nipples to try to avoid the puffy look they had at most times Avoid beaches, swimming pools, or any other situation that required me to be bare chested   Well, a lot of time has passed since then. I joined the military, got out of the military, started my own business and got married. I am 30 years old now, and I first noticed my gynecomastia symptoms when I was 15 years old.   After being in denial about the problem for most of my twenties, I began to notice a hideous change that “took me back” to my freshman year in high school in one frightening instant…   The ugly suckers began to reappear with a vengeance! I was mostly in denial of their return until one evening my sister in law sat down to eat with my wife and I. When I sat down, I was wearing a plain white undershirt. The undershirt was admittedly a little small, and it highlighted the presence of my puffy nipples.   She made a joke about me “needing a training bra”.
