So The Question You Must Ask Yourself Is This: Do You Want To Be Better Than Most Musicians Out There? From: Dominic Hough Hi fellow Musician After opening my website dedicated to all things Beginner Techno Music Making 5 years ago (time flies) I have noticed 1 major thing: There are more musicians online now who want to know how to make it than was previously thought. This was also highlighted by an obscure page that I designed for "unsigned techno artists". Within 1 week of release- it was full of artists trying to highlight their music or website. I allowed comments and they were very positive, introducing new fans to artists they wouldn't of heard of before. I was overwhelmed with artists sending me MP3s through my email to review and many more asking me what was wrong with their site. That was my problem. And became a burning question for me. If the Internet is so good at music promotion then why was my one, hidden page so overwhelmed with unsigned acts? I know there are plenty of books on music marketing, so why don't they apparently seem to work? Here Are My 5 Factors To Why Musicians Fail To Promote Anything Online. You don't want to keep on buying book upon book and finding out that again, the latest and greatest doesn't work. But there are fundamental factors which will stop you from achieving your goal. So if they are not identified early on in your music making process, then however good you think your track is it won't actually do any good. So you are off to a bad start. Then all that time, money and energy that has gone into your music marketing process is wasted. FACTOR #1: The Same Music Marketing Information That Is Present In Most Books Is That Same As What You Read Years Ago Rehashed is a word that comes to mind. But also money in the pockets to the writers of these "info books". It is so easy to get an ebook, re-write it in your own words, then reprint it and then get a star to write a testimonial for you. It is a shame that you will get ripped off from this. What most individuals don't realise is that Internet music marketing is ever changing. There is more competition- more people trying to grab the attention of the same number of fans. This is an epidemic in most marketing circles (just go into Google and type in "marketing+ebooks". Read one, and then another...see how they are roughly the same? Because they are written by people with no clue who read a website or one book and decided they were music marketers as well. FACTOR #2: The "Internet Musician Cycle" Of Today As you well know, I run the website: www.make-your-own-dance-and-techno-songs.com with in excess of 3000 visitors/ day (increasing weekly) and I write a blog. I have seen sites that make you wince, I have also seen musicians that should be out there and recognised but they aren't. That saddens me greatly. Because it takes time to create tracks, and some are real good- effort has been put into them but they are not getting heard...then after a year, maybe 2 if they are determined, they give up. This is a fundamental problem with the musician of today. This is the Internet musicians cycle as I call it. They have the music, they have some pretty decent tunes. So what do they do? They put up a website They create a MySpace page They create A Twitter profile They create CDs and merchandise They blog They tag They "do" every community site that has been created...and more. Then they wait... Sounds familiar doesn't it? If all musicians are doing this, because marketing ebooks have told them so, then why aren't we hearing more from these unsigned acts? Why is their big break always so far away...if it ever comes? FACTOR #3: Too Little Time But So Many Websites Did you know that there are too many sites on the Internet? I mean how many community sites do we actually need? How many MP3 sites do we need to sign-up to? Dotblu, Facebook, Twitter, MySpace...the list is endless...however we are (according to a lot of marketing books) supposed to join every single one of them. This is rubbish. Twitter is a fine example. I do not care if you are feeding your cat and I don't really care that you have finished your new web page. Twitter is a fine example of time wasting and this is a major key in why musicians have failed. And...if you don't post regularly then your visitors disappear- these sites have you trapped. We are investing too much time in too many websites. I will explain exactly the websites that you really need to use. The ones that will get you farther more quickly and with greater success. With tricks and tips to keeping hold onto fans as well as generating new fans. Yes, until Twitter becomes a needed weapon for the musician dispose of Twitter and while you are at it...what is the point of Flicker? FACTOR #4: Did You Know That Music Marketing Doesn't Really Start With You Submitting Your Tracks To MySpace? This is really a major reason why musicians fail. Hey, I want to help you, and if you think that this is going against the grain, well then there is much more to come. Internet Musician Rule 101: If your music stinks, then it is not really going to do any good. Now, most music marketing texts or experts won't tell you this. They automatically point you in the direction of MySpace and tags, but it is a fundamental reason why musicians fail in the first place. If you have a track that sucks and blows, then why would anyone promote it yet alone download it? Sometimes, finding out that your music isn't good is actually a good thing because it actually allows you to concentrate on those poor areas, improve them and then get better. Before I made my tunes that I advertise on my site, I went through years of improvement, and you still improve as time goes on (as long as you allow it). Now what I want you to do is tell your friends to shut up if they say your tracks are good. No they are not. If your tracks were that good then they would be out and about on the Internet in no time. Your friends are nice critics (and good spreaders) only because they tell you want you want to hear, not what you need to hear. Good critics are hard to come by, but I will explain how to find the best ones, and for free. These are people who you need to listen to because failure to do so will just make your time online harsh. Sign Up To Become A Knight Of The Music Marketing Round Table. Name (first and last): Your E-Mail: FACTOR #5: The Best Song That You Can Produce Is? The first. This is your starter song, your introduction....your interview song. This is what your audience will base the rest of your tracks from. So if you blow this one, it is very hard to make a second impression (unless you create another name for yourself). Every one-hit-wonder has suffered from this first track problem. Their first one is great, so there is anticipation for the rest of the tracks...and it doesn't happen. They haven't got a blueprint for chart topping success- or if they did, they threw it completely down the drain. After your first song, every song that you release will be judged by the one preceding it. Every track that you release will be your advert, it will be you. So if you wreak it, then you tend to dent yourself. This is another reason why so many musicians fail...they just do not make good tunes, or keep on making bad tunes. Hey. Get a reality check here. If you really like making tunes, then why don't you like to polish them off? If you like making tunes then why do you only make 2 of them and think you will get a record contract from that? DJ Ferry Corsten makes sure that all his tracks are musically the best that he can produce before he sends them out. He has engineers to help him out and a record company that states that he has to create x amount of albums/ year...but Ferry knows that each track and each album is a reflection upon himself. This is what the pros do. So it is what the unsigned must do. I will show you in simple easy steps how to make the best song possible, I will show you simple steps that you can take to constantly be ahead of your game. See, music marketing isn't attracting your fans simply by general marketing means...its the actual making of the track that is the marketing. I Want To Create Something That Someone, Anyone Can Pick Up, Use And Then Get Some Kickin' Benefits From...Do You Know What? I Think I Have Done Just That. If someone told me that they had 250 techniques on how to promote my music, I would say..."in the first chapter?" I have created a no-nonsense music marketing ebook that is vastly ahead of its time. Not just because it features 160 pages of music marketing tips and techniques that generate many artists fans and income, but because I go to lengths to explain the BS that plagues us today. Not all music marketing tactics actually work. But because they are a music marketing tactic should they be included? No. They shouldn't and I don't apologise for that. You will find that there are some techniques that you think should be in there be aren't...why? Because they don't work...so your time will be wasted. And wasting time is a big turn off. Should we include in there tactics that need you to spend over $250? No, because these are just money grabbing tactics that yield in pretty poor results. Case in point: Yahoo! Directory. You need to spend $250 to get into it...what is the point? There are plenty more, and better directories out there, and also Yahoo! puts you into their search engine for free anyway? However many marketing ebooks will say you must pay Yahoo? It doesn't work, its expensive and the results are poor. We are after free or extremely cheap...
