The keyboard stop working all the sudden. My computer reports memory errors on startup. That is quite a list isn't it? And if I hadn't helped these problems would have cost the sender at least $40 or more an hour to fix each one! Would you repair them yourself if you knew how? Here is a this list of things you can do - Build a custom PC By building your own custom pc you will be able to use higher quality parts. With higher quality parts your computer will last longer and be easier to upgrade. Doing the labor yourself will save you a substantial amount of money. Upgrade PC Upgrading an existing computer is cheaper than buying a new computer. By upgrade one or two components at a time. By upgrading single components over a period of time you can shop for bargains and save money. Back up your data Your data is one of your most valuable resources. If you loose your data in a hardware failure would you be able to reconstruct it? The chances of that are very small. An email I received a while ago - My laptop shut down all the sudden.When I start it up I hear a single 'click' then the screen says 'Invalid disk'. I know the hard drive is dead, how would I get my files off of it? If he had a backup then he would have less to worry about. Do you have a backup? With a backup of your data done on a scheduled basis a hardware failure would be less catastrophic. Once you have your hardware problem fixed you can restore the data at the point of the last backup. Laptop repair Laptops are more popular than desktops, a survey in 2007 reveled. Laptop repair is almost but not quite the same as a desktop. Because of the construction of the laptop it is in a smaller case and most components are made to fit that case. If you do your own repair the cost savings is in the labor. It happens with out you knowing it, you put the computer in a laptop carrying case, it is padded but not bullet proof. To open a laptop takes some finesse, you need to know how to do it and what tools are best for opening the case with out damaging it. Build yourself a Server With a server your security for your network increased a thousand fold, you can require that users have complexity in their user id and password. This makes it harder for thieves to get in to your network. With a server you can share files, work in collaboration on projects. You can share printers instead of each user having a printer each consolidate that cost in to one or two higher quality printers and save money. With a domain you can have a single log on for all applications, email, printer, and file sharing. You can also cut down on the installation of applications that can be shared, installed on the server and shared by all authorized users. The cost savings of all these different options in to one server is enormous when compared individually for each PC. Optimize your Operating System When your Operating System is first loaded your computer will run as fast as it will ever be.  Once you start loading programs you can watch the speedometer fall from fast to slow.  How do you over come this built in obsolescence and make your computer faster than the day you first turned it on? By Optimizing the OS! By doing these procedures you can extend the lifetime of your current computer by months or even years. Make a bootable device What is a bootable device? And why would you need one? A bootable device is a floppy, pen drive, CD, or external hard drive that you can use to start your computer if it has a hard drive failure or the Operating System becomes unusable (bootable) because of corruption, hardware problems, or a virus. Operating System Tools Operating System Tools are utilities that you use to defrag your hard drives, set permissions on user id’s, troubleshoot hardware problems., or work with hard drives. You can also increase the security of your computer by setting services. Disaster recovery When you have a disaster be it a natural catastrophe or a hardware failure you need to get your computer up and running as soon as possible. There are different levels of disaster recovery from recovering your data after a hard drive replacement to recovering your data to a new computer. How you do this depends on how you setup your recovery plan. Remember it is your data and to keep it yours safe guard it!
