All of the research on binaural beats clearly indicate that by and large they don't work. The article in Scientific American by Oster had EEG tracings which showed that BBs do not entrain. Other studies show that white-noise produced a better relaxation effect than BBs do. Only one study by Jim Lane suggests that beta BBs improved attention better than theta BBs. When used without headphones, ie: speakers, BBs "mix" into the air and enter the ears as MONO beats, which do work.
